I now know what to do if I'm ever shopping in Canada. Since I live in the California mountains, I go into the big city once a month and hit Costco's for about $500, Food4Less for another $100, and I occasionally go to our small town super market to get milk or 1/2 & 1/2 which I can't buy by the month.
The garden provides a lot of the salad stuff along with some of the veggies. We've bought a pressure cooker/canner along with a bunch or jars to extend the harvest into the Winter.
The plan is to become as self-sufficient as possible.
I'm re-thinking solar panels and a used Prius. Gas and electric is a major expense. I'd hate to have the batteries to care for. I'd probably still stay on the grid. I've got lots of trees that shade the house. I guess I'd have to clear cut a bunch of trees to provide enough sunlight for the solar panels. I wonder if some criminal would steal the $8K panel setup if he could see it on some structure away from the house? Someone would definitely see it. It would be safest on the house roof.
I've removed 5/8ths of the old roof and I'm waiting for the dumpster to come back from the dump to finish the tear-down phase. The plywood sheets above both bathrooms are toast. I stepped right thru the 1/2" sheet yesterday. The vents and eaves are where the rain gets in and weakens the wood. So, I'll havta replace some 4x8 plywood sheets. Much of the roof hasn't gotten wet and that lumber will stay.
I'm getting stronger. I can stay out in the sun longer and I get more footage done in the hour, or so, I can do in a stint. It's still near 100F daily.
I mostly shop at Aldi's. Fruits and veggies I go to a farmers market. I also go to Sam's Club, even tho I hate Walmart.. Sam's Club seems different somehow.
