I just picked up the full boxed edition of Pro for $39.95 at Staples. It's $99.95 on sale for $69.95 and there's a $30 off coupon, so it's $39.95.
What I first read said I could update Win 7 or Vista without having to reload programs, but according to the box it only works for Win 7. I was going to update the Dell 1520 lappy which has Vista, but I dunno now.
I have it installed on my laptop at work on the second harddrive. Also, I have it installed on my Acer W500 tablet and I enjoy it on both devices. I have been using it everyday at work since I installed it and do not intend to boot into Windows 7 unless I need to. (I have 2 hybrid harddrives that I dual boot with.)
At home, I have not yet upgraded. The OCZ SSD Caching drive needs to be compatible with Ultra fast boot on my 990FX Extreme 4. Also, I would need to purchase bluray playback software as well. (The dataplex caching software also is not compatible with Windows 8 yet but it will be soon.)
I like the Modern Interface especially on dual screens. However, I also use the desktop mostly since it is my work computer as well.
The thing is though there are no problems on Win7, and none on XP either. Also, in Win8, inside the browser content area (below the window header with the address bar and nav buttons and such) the text is crisp just like in Win7. But the address bar text, text in the menu items, and in other programs isn't.
If your PC is currently running Windows 7, your files, apps, and settings will easily transfer to Windows 8. If your PC is running Windows XP or Windows Vista, you'll need to reinstall your apps after you upgrade.
I've been using Win7 for three years now, and while it's definitely all-around thee best version of Windows ever, it's not without its (very minor) flaws. Just little quirky stuff, nothing major.
I'm a sucker for having the latest and greatest, so if Win8.1 improved upon the sucky changes, I'd probably upgrade for the right price. After I tried it out in a VM of course.
