I would imagine that the back-up battery would still sulfate eventually if left unchecked for years. The power could easily go out if there was a fire in the house walls. Having a rechargeable battery would be better, but more expensive. I think it's cheaper to just replace the battery every year. It think that's the bottom line - cheapness.
How about the Boeing 787 battery problems? I'm gonna stick with the 9 volt yearly replacement method. I'd hate to install a Lithium Polymer battery that could start the fire I'm trying to detect. Also, Lithium is getting scarcer and more expensive. I think we have a problem needing an Edison.
Smoke detectors are useless. You have a party and are cooking for 10 people and invariably the smoke detector will go off and the cook is waving a towel around trying to get it off, so you finally just yank the battery to turn it off and have your party in peace and quiet.. then forget to rearm the detector
