Yeah, people are put in prison for committing actual crimes (and often for committing non-crimes too). To escape is to "break free from confinement or control". That's human nature and per-se there is nothing wrong with it, and nothing unjust or criminal about it... in fact our country was basically founded upon that principle.
That's not to say once they escape they should be off scott-free. Just that escaping shouldn't add time to their sentence.
I kinda understand both arguments, but lean more towards the belief that it shouldn't be a crime.
