One of the more obscure trivia items this season, is that the Detroit Tigers pitching staff struck out more batters this season than ANY other pitching staff IN THE HISTORY OF THE GAME (single season all-time record)
Then, to top it off, they struck out more batters in the 5 game division series against Oakland, than any other team ever has during a 5 game post season series
I think they are more or less penalizing the catcher for throwing the ball away. Had he made a clean throw, this never would have had a chance to happen
You can see that the third basemen stuck his legs up and tripped the base runner. Although "intent" isn't required, he clearly meant to impede the runner's progress. He KNEW that the runner was going to score when that throw got away and he did the only thing he could to try and prevent it from happening at that point.
In any event, Boston is now up 3-2 and heading back to Fenway for game #6.
