One of the things about Radio shack that used to be cool, they had etched "protoboards" that were shaped and wired identical to their solderless breadboards, which made it easy to make your project permanent after you got all the bugs sifted out.

There is a monthly magazine titled "Nuts and Volts" that you might find interesting.
They offer up a lot of ideas for 'Basic Stamp' type projects

I bought this book for 25 cents at my local library's "bargain basement"

Intel has a similar book dedicated to promoting the USB interface that might interest you as well.
