Sandhill cranes
Any of you ever witness their migration? They fly way up high, and have a very peculiar call, that sounds like it's right next to you as they pass overhead.
It's sorta half 'coo' and half 'chortle'
I'd been hearing it off and on for about a week now, not knowing wtf it was making the noise, and just happened to look up and saw what looked like white necked geese shimmering in the sun. So, I checked around and a lot of people around here have been seeing them.
The page on them over at wiki commons has lots of pictures and some soundbites. It's worth checking out.

I've never seen these before live. And I'd been hearing them for about a week, not having a clue what I was hearing. I thought the sound was coming from some bird in a nearby bush. Then, last Monday I just happened to look up, and saw two formations flying by at about 200 feet altitude. And they fly kinda like geese, except that their feathers really shimmer silver in the sunshine. SO, I was wondering WTF?
Just happened to check out a local nature site on the web, and these people had a thread going about "Have you seen these? we bet you've at least heard them"...and it was the same birds I had seen. And lots of people from here across the state to Lafayette have reported seeing groups all headed North.
