I just noticed that I haven't worked errors in there yet. That is easy enough: An error essentially gives the other team an extra out to play with. Giving the other team an out is analogous to taking one away from yourself. I will work that in right now. Done.
Well I used my new system to score the Jays-Phillies game yesterday - and it didn't take long for me to run into some problems. The notion of a "productive out" requires a rethink. Far too many outs are simply third outs or outs with nobody on base. Also, I forgot that many outs are double plays (and occasionally triple plays) - hardly productive at all when a player ends an inning with a weak grounder to the shortstop into the familiar 6-4-3 DP. In those instances, a strikeout is actually less damaging.
So I did a rework. (Again, it's not perfect yet... I would have preferred something that simply accumulates during the season.) I turned my "Pts" system into a "+/-" system, and dropped the productive out concept - at least for now.
It now works like this:
- An out is an out (no matter how it happens) - A base is a base (ditto)
Using a little reverse psychology, we manage to handle errors, pick offs, caught stealing, passed balls, etc. all in the same manner. (Giving the other team extra outs is no different than taking them away from yourself. Ditto for bases.)
