Congrats on the new watch. I had a Seiko automatic diver's watch before. I wore it almost everyday for over 15 years until the strap broke while I was riding my bike and the watch fell off. That was a watch that was really bulletproof and never needed servicing but the downside was its weight. I had to replace the rubber strap every 2 or 3 years.
I've been using digital watches like Casio or Timex for many years. I found that whatever band you use, it will eventually develop an odor from your sweat. I now take it off when I shower or go to sleep. I've changed to the metal band because it's considerably tougher and less odor absorbing. I do a lot of mechanical work and it gets snagged, or breaks, if it hooks on something I can't avoid. I also beat the crystal into a scratchy mess. I buy a watch every couple of years. I like the atomic on-time all the time ones. It's something I can count on being correct.
