The hardest part is driving in white out, sub-zero conditions, on icy roads using all-season tires. I did this once from Toronto to Chicago and would not want to ever do it again. I got caught in a blizzard somewhere in the Michigan area... you could see cars and trucks in ditches.
Other tips when driving in the winter: Always top up on windshield washer fluid; try to have at least half a tank full of gas, and bring a lighter powered electric air pump with you.
In the winter, it is extremely difficult to replace a tire. Usually when you suffer a flat you can inflate the tire and still be able to find a service station nearby to get it properly repaired/replaced. That is what the electric air pump is for. The windshield washer is self explanatory. You learn from experience... one time I ran out of washer fluid in winter while driving in the freeway... I had to stop in the shoulder and manually wipe the windshield with paper towels (luckily I had those on hand) after the salty spray made it almost impossible to keep driving.
Also, try to avoid getting behind gravel carrying dump trucks or any huge rig for that matter. Their tires sometimes launch pebbles/gravel at you and can result in dings or worse, cracks on your windshield.
On one of my Circle Tour trips around Lake Michigan, my buddy and I left Mackinaw City and crossed the Mackinac Bridge into the UP and started heading west towards Wisconsin. The wind off the lake was so strong we had to ride our motorcycles leaning to the left at a 45° angle just to keep going straight. If we tried to ride straight up, the wind would blow us to the right.
