I get my pens at the local Dollar Store - 10 for a dollar. They all work well enough for me. The only troubling time is when the paper I'm trying to write a note on has some dirt or grease on it. The ball point gets clogged and runs dry. I just replace the paper or post-it and alls well again.
I've been working with Sabuk to write his scholarship application essays. This would sometimes use writing on a pad outside on a bench out of his room. This approach would get him to stop editing everything he thought of and just get some ideas written down. It still would get typed into the computer to get it double spaced, nice font, and multiple copies. He sent out 11 applications to the local scholarship foundations.
He scored one yesterday for a thousand dollars. There will be another interview for an $8K one next Thursday. He has one chance in 3 to get that - only two other applicants.
We end up having to pay $9k a year for his college - UCDavis. That $9k will consist of subsidized loans for $3500 and a Perkins loan for $2k. We've got to come up with the rest - $3500. That's each year. He'll find work study and move out of the dorm during the next year. It costs $15K for dorm life. College ain't cheap. $33K/year - Pell grants, Cal grants and other free money covers $27K of it. This has been on my mind for the last few weeks. Sorry for the thread shift.
I think he'll be needing some good pens for a while. I think any pen can get greased up or pull in some dirt. I think one doesn't care if the gel flows easily or not if he can write down the note in time for the next one. So, in this case, I go for quantity not quality.
I still use a pencil to write my blood sugar levels onto a little paper calendar that is in my insulin and blood sugar checker case. I don't care if the written number is fat or skinny.
I find myself writing a lot less today than I used to - which sucks because I like paper. One of the guys at work snickered when I pulled out a day planner for 2013. (Everyone just uses their cell phone these days.)
It's not hard to imagine that in just one more generation, humans will completely lose the ability to write on paper. Paper will not exist in another generation.
