I think that it was Coca Cola who was instrumental in getting the Stevia ban lifted.
Recalling back, coke was one of the pioneers that switched from sugar to HFCS to break the sugar cartels. Then as the Ethanol craze started pressuring the corn commodities price up, coke started experimenting with Stevia as a potential replacemsnt for HFCS.
Of course with Stevia's indelible licorice aftertaste, the folks at coke would have to pull another "new coke" subterfuge designed to get their current product off the consumer's palates long enough for their memories to fade. Then Coke would eventually admit their error, and gives us back "classic coke II" , sweetened with Stevia, of course
