So who here is using Windows 8/8.1 on a desktop machine, and likes it?
I picked up an orientation book for Win 8.1 out of curiosity, and from what I've seen thus far it appears as though MS is doing everything it can to expedite the demise of the "personal computer" as we've known it.
With no start menu, how do you find/launch installed traditional applications?

If that is even possible, given MS's proprietary API hoarding.
Stardock was an old trustworthy supplier back in my OS/2 days, in fact I met Brad Wardell years ago, at Comdex.
In fact, I am using it right now on my work and home desktops. (On my Surface RT as well but that is what it comes with.) The fact is, I have the Start Screen setup just as I want and have the live tiles that I want running on it. It is quite easy to use and gives me the option of using the full screen apps as well.
I prefer additional functionality, not same old, same old. Heck, even OS/2 Warp did more out of the box than Windows 7 does. I do have Win7, WinXP, Win Vista and Ubuntu 12.04 in running in Virtualbox for the times I need it at work.
One word I will use for Windows 8.1: FAST!
My personal bet is that Microsoft's research indicates that the desktop platform is a walking deadman in the consumer arena, and is taking shots in the dark at catching the next wave. Can't shoot a bullseye everytime out, I guess.
My bet is that we are at a point of divergence, What was once knit together by merging W98 and NT to a single platform will soon be undone.
The Desktop product will become more enterprise exclusive, while they will "improve" the Win8 concept looking for a formula that a larger share of consumers can agree on
