I still think you aren't getting the idea of being poor. You can't sell one of your old cars to pay the rent if you don't own the old cars. You've somehow got this assumption that everyone has enough money to just choose what he does next. If you didn't have the food and shelter, what would be your choices? Is being homeless a choice? What if you got the girl pregnant and her family wants to kill you? What would your choices be then? Running away is common in this situation. The girl's family takes the hit. So you might try to get a job doing some IT work. What if you didn't have the skills to get that job? Walmart is all that's left - or flipping burgers. Is this a decision? How many cars do you own - are they in running shape? Are you seeing what I'm getting at?
