I haven't been following it that closely, but I know a little bit about it.
I tend to like to know all the facts (or as many facts as possible) before judging, and personally from what I've seen/heard I don't think enough facts have been released for so many people to be jumping on the neighborhood watch dude's back like everyone has been.
I'm not saying he acted appropriately and isn't guilty of a crime -- I just don't think it can be said he's guilty at this point in time.
"One witness, who has since talked to local television news reporters, told police he saw Zimmerman on the ground with Trayvon on top, pounding him — and was unequivocal that it was Zimmerman who was crying for help.
Zimmerman then shot Trayvon once in the chest at very close range, according to authorities."
This story sounds a little fishy, especially after seeing the video of Zimmerman jumping out of the police cruiser while handcuffed with no blood on his shirt or any wound on his face. They say they cleaned his broken nose up. But, there would be blood spatter from shooting someone in such close proximity and from his own wounds. He might have changed his clothes. There's more to this story.
People everywhere are getting permits to carry concealed weapons. This makes me feel so much safer.
More idiots with reasons to use a gun sounds about right.
When in your life have you really needed to have a gun?
Maybe in someone's imagination there can be some situation that could be concocted where he needs the gun. For that situation, he gets the permit, buys the holster, buys the bullets, buys the safe to store it all in and then teaches all the others in the house that this is dangerous. "So, don't play around with this stuff, I'm warning you."
Then while he's cleaning said gun one day the garage has a fire, the neighbor has a medical emergency and he has to drive them to the hospital, or whatever. Oops, he left the gun out in the open and the kids are at home.
The criminals aren't worried about who else has a gun. They will get the drop on whomever they are gonna rob or do harm to. Is your concealed gun ready to fire? Safety release easy to flip? Bullet in the chamber? Holster just carrying the gun without a way of keeping it in the holster? You'll have to decide you're going to use it, pull it out, and kill the guy. No hesitation! Is it ready day in and day out?
What about when you go to the beach? Do you wear a jacket in the Summer to hide it? Where do you store it then? Does anyone see it when you get undressed for the beach?
I'm sure all this will cost you a few hundred bucks. To me it buys me nothing but trouble. But that's just me.
Maybe that's how the black kid with the hoody was killed. Who knows?
I'm with you on this, TechGuy. The wild west has been conquered and cities have sprung up. The population doesn't need to work out problems at the OK Corral any more. I'm not sure that courts and lawyers are much of an alternative. But, still it's better than carrying guns for safety at Church or a sports stadium.

That says it all for me. Self defense.
