Do we really need an army?

We've got an air force to stop enemy forces from invading us via the airways, a navy to stop them from invading us via the waterways, we've got the most heavily armed populace in the world, and we've got tons of nukes and anti-nukes.

So while it's obviously necessary for achieving imperialistic goals and such, is a standing army and/or army reserve even necessary for defense?
