Since everyone does gravitate to this profession, you've got to find some niche market.
The Buick speedometer fixit guy comes to mind. He went to all the junk yards he could find and bought all the Buick speedometer parts (broken or intact) for a few years. Then, he announced on the web, that he would repair any year, any model Buick speedometer. Since he had all the available parts, he would just go to his mailbox and repair what was sent to him. He became the place all the NAPA guys would use for Buick speedometers. He was busy for many years and didn't overcharge. He's out of the business now. He sold it to a number of kids in the neighborhood. He found a niche because he couldn't find the part he needed at his local junk yard.
Aren't there sub-routines needed to be written in assembly any more? Aren't there website search routines that can find the VW Golf sensors that could cause it to run poorly when it heats up? I need that list. It's all out there. But, I need to find the expert that knows how to go about finding the sensor that's causing the problem. The manual is covering many years and many systems that were used on the Golf. There is no manual that's specific to the Digifant II system that was used on a California smogable 91 Golf made in Mexico. The dealer would know. I'd pay him $300 for that conversation - if I could get the chance to talk to the service guy. There are blogs out there. It takes a lot of research. Can you find a way to organise them?
